Since second grade it has been part of my son’s Christmas break to butcher his pig, this year a yellow pig, to count his savings for the whole year. These are the coins he saved from the money I gave him everyday as his ‘baon’ to school, some P5, some P10, on days where he can save much there’s P20, some of the paper bills were cash gifts from uncles and aunts – he put directly on his piggy bank.

This year he was able to pull together some P2,015.00 from December of the same day last year until this afternoon – I can’t believe with those coins he was able scope-up this amount. I was actually surprised that as my son accumulate age, he became so prudent about spending – I didn’t know that as I told him every time he ask money -  to buy only the things he need, he absorbed and now practice it. I sometimes get caught unaware as every time I ask my husband if we can buy this or that it’s my son who would say, ‘do really need that mom?’ … it’s some kinda bell that kept ringing every time I pick on some stuff – it would make pause and ask my self … do I really need this?

Though at times I always say not to deprive ourselves with the things we feel we’re happy with, it’s also at some point a good personal attribute to save a little, something he can pull just in case some unexpected, unlikely events will happen — and in this case I’m teaching ‘em young.
