I didn’t grow up riding any ‘lil war horse’, probably because there wasn’t any around our neighborhood, there might be one somewhere during those times but my parents can’t afford to take me there, in other words, I simply knew carousels on books and magazines. But don’t take me to have a lonesome childhood, we had alternatives – climbing trees, jumping into the river naked, chasing old Macoys chickens, meeting friends over the hill-sharing stories-laying on our backs, fighting spiders, flying kites and all – typical child’s life in a rural neighborhood.

When I got married, I’ve moved to the city and had children, I used to think of doing the above too, but there wasn’t any opportunity to do so, I was a bit taken aback that all of the things I find enjoyment in my childhood turned out to be dangerous as I approach adulthood, climbing trees is prohibited in the city – besides the fact that there aren’t any, nobody love’s to jump naked in a river all filled with floating whatevers, would you? Chickens are supposed to be chased, you’d feel rewarded biting it to the bones when it’s laid on soup on the table, sadly, chickens can’t even run neither fly in the city – my son once said, aren’t there any other color for chicken other than white? Sigh! Of course there are.

I’d love meeting friends over ‘Hill’s Brothers’ café, we still can share stories of whatever but this restricts us to lie on our backs with birds flying and gentle breeze embracing us. No spider fights either – this is a violation of this arachnids’ rights, no collection of match boxes with coco leaves room in it – making it was a skill, I tell yah. Much more no kites flying in the city – the electric companies prohibits it, you’ll mess up the electric lines.

Hence, don’t get mad at your kids playing computer games, this is the safest alternative they have when in the city, good for those who have extra as they send their kids to study other worthwhile activities. However, dangerous on the other side, this is a social menace practically all parents have to deal with – squarely and painfully.
